Introduction
One of Korea’s representative Catholic churches located at the entrance of Hanok VillageLocated at the entrance of Jeonju’s Hanok Village, the church was erected in honor of Roman Catholic martyrs of the Joseon Dynasty. Construction Started 100 years after the martyrs lost their lives in 1891 and ended in 1914, when Korea was under Japanese occupation. The church was designed by French Priest Baudenet, designer of the famous Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul.
The cathedral’s unique combination of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, its resemblance to the Myeongdong Cathedral, and its status as the first building of its kind in the Jeolla region make it a popular photo spot for local and foreign tourists.
